Council Offers Internet Class on Treated Southern Pine
Date Posted: 9/1/2005
Design and building professionals have a new information resource available about treated lumber. The Southern Pine Council is sponsoring a new online ‘eClass’ titled, ‘Pressure-Treated Southern Pine,’ at its Web site at www.southernpine.com.
The easy-to-follow program emphasizes the use of treated Southern pine lumber for protecting structures against moisture, decay and termites. The course is accented with full-color photographs and additional links to popular Southern pine publications and literature.
The eClass includes 10 sequential lessons. Each lesson focuses on such topics as the pressure-treating process, grade and quality marks, proper fasteners and connections, and quality finishes. Participants will learn how to control moisture, how to choose preservative treatments that protect wood products, and more.
The class includes complete information on the various types of preservatives used to treat Southern pine: copper azole, alkaline copper quat, sodium borates, and chromated copper arsenate.
Upon completion of the one-hour session, qualified professionals (architects, engineers and builders) earn continuing education credits.
“Treated Southern pine is a leading building material nationwide, so it made sense for treated wood to be the focus of our second eClass,” said Melissa Miranda, marketing manager of the Southern Pine Council.
The first eClass offered, ‘Design, Specify, Build,’ is still available online.
To access the online courses, go to the Council’s home page. On the left-side of the page, click on ‘Education,’ and then click on ‘eClassroom.’The Southern Pine Council is a joint promotional organization coordinated and supported by producing members of the Southern Forest Products Association and the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association.
