Planer-Moulder Proves Versatile for Calif. Mill

All Bay Mill & Lumber Adds Pinheiro Planer-Moulder from River Valley Machinery

AMERICAN CANYON, Calif. — Guido Addiego emigrated from Italy to the U.S. in 1959, when he was 15. He got a job as a laborer in a lumber yard in Richmond, Va., later working himself up to saw operator foreman, dispatcher, manager, vice president and then became a part-owner. In 1984 he moved to California’s Napa Valley and started his own company in American Canyon.
        Guido started All Bay Mill & Lumber Co. with two associates. He bought an old mill with a lumber yard on 10 acres of land.
        Today the company stocks about 4 million board feet of lumber and timber, has about 35 employees and annual sales of about $23 million. It’s fair to say that Guido, president and CEO, came to this country to achieve the American dream and succeeded.
        Two of his children are involved in the business, too. His son, Frank, is vice president and his daughter, Susanna Brooks, is secretary treasurer.
        When Guido bought the old mill, some of the machinery was over 100 years old. He continued to use it but gradually began upgrading the equipment.
        One original moulder is still operating. According to mill foreman Jeff Privett, the moulder dates to 1905. “We’ve decided to keep this one,” said Jeff. “It has a 4x12 capacity, and the side heads can be tilted up to 30 degrees. It’s good for beveling on any type of lumber. It’s pretty basic. It has its own infeed system but no outfeed system. But the tilting side heads are a good feature that more up-to-date machines do not have.”
        The company replaced another aging moulder with a Pinheiro 1000 series machine supplied by River Valley Machinery Inc. in East Livermore, Maine. All Bay works with large timbers and wanted a planer-moulder that was rugged enough for large material and also was capable of producing a high quality finish, too.
        Jeff has been very pleased with the Pinheiro machine and the training and service provided by River Valley Machinery. “This machine has four heads for surfacing four sides,” he said. “We can do all types of patterns with it — basic, like tongue and groove and shiplap patterns, but also any type of moulding the design calls for. Whatever the design, we can run it on this machine. It has a variable speed system, so depending on the type of pattern, you can slow it down or speed it up. We have the option of a second bottom head that uses profiles and patterns from a fifth spindle, added to the four main ones.”
        Other features that Jeff has appreciated about the Pinheiro 1000 planer-moulder include its compact footprint, which is made for easy installation, minimal operating and maintenance costs, and its ability to do both rough and high quality finish work. Also, the motors and adjusting systems are mounted externally for easy access, and the machine is totally enclosed to minimize noise and enhance safety.
        Optional features available from Pinheiro include a pre-planing head for removing excess thickness or cleaning dirty material on the top face, removable heads for quick changes between planing and profiling and an outfeed for single piece feeding of timbers and material.
        All Bay also purchased a profile grinder from River Valley. “We use it to cut any pattern the customer wants,” said Jeff. “It basically works like key cutting. Just lock the pattern in place, trace it, and the cut is customized.” The machines have been in use at All Bay about nine months.
        All Bay modified the mill building prior to installing the new machines and a new saw line featuring two Northfield cut-off saws and two Topps radial arm saws ­— all equipped with a Hains measuring device for quick changes on cutting different length lumber. A Dario corbel cutting machine can cut a wide variety of corbel patterns.
        The company’s lumber remanu­facturing operations also are equipped with a Newman-Whitney K-20 triple-end trim saw that can cut two different length studs at the same time from one long piece of stock. All Bay also has a Robinson 60-inch with a variable feed transmission unit and tilting fence for doing pattern work; it is capable of resawing timbers up to 18 inches wide and 24 inches tall. It has a fleet of eight forklifts and eight semi-trucks.
        General manager John Wayne said the company’s strong point is supplying materials for commercial construction projects. “Our forte is selling to commercial contractors who build schools, hospitals, bridges, shopping centers and freeways,” said John. All Bay also caters to custom home builders. “We do pre-cut housing packages and manufacture timbers and produce patterns for sidings, mouldings, and so on.”
        All Bay supplies regular treated lumber and lumber treated to resist fire. The company offers custom treating and drying service and engineered wood products.
        Most sales are within a 100-mile radius. “We can and do go beyond that limit,” John said. “We serviced a large, custom condominium in Reno and the aquarium in Monterey.”
        The company also distributes a variety of building products, including Glu-Lam structural wood products, Tru-Joist I-joists, and James Hardie siding, plywood and more. It also sells a considerable volume of Western red cedar lumber.
        All Bay has four sales representatives and two buyers. “Fast turnaround time is a plus for keeping customers happy and getting new clients,” John said. “The foundation for success in the lumber industry is service. All lumber yards buy from the same sources and pay the same price. The only real difference we can offer is service — to get our clients what they want in a timely manner so they can avoid construction delays.”
        This is the key reason, John explained, why the River Valley machines have been so important to the business. “We had to farm out our specialty mill work,” he said, “and sometimes it took us 10 days to get it back. Now, with the River Valley machines, we can do next day delivery.”

 
River Valley Helping Mills Add Value
        Maquinas Pinheiro Ltd. in Portugal has been manufacturing woodworking machinery since 1929. It has been imported into the U.S. by American distributors since the 1980s.
        “All Bay Mill & Lumber discovered us through the Internet,” recalled Stan Spilecki, president of River Valley Machinery in East Livermore, Maine, which represents the Portuguese manufacturer in the U.S.
        One reason All Bay turned to Pinheiro is because domestic manufacturers of large timber planers and planer-moulders have long been out of business, Stan noted. The machines still in operation have been around for decades, and parts and supplies are increasingly difficult to find.
        “In Europe the Pinheiro machines are known for timber planing, but here in the U.S. they are used more as planer-moulders to mould log cabin logs and higher-end, wide plank flooring,” Stan said. “All Bay was looking to do moulding as well as big timbers that had a moulding quality finish.”
        River Valley has sold Pinheiro machines mainly on the East Coast and central U.S., with only a few in operation in the West, in Oregon and British Columbia. “We had been looking to expand our market to the West Coast,” Stan said. “I found it intriguing that All Bay is in Napa Valley, doing what they do. You usually think of that as wine country.”
        The negotiations and sale were worked out almost completely by phone or fax, according to Stan. “We encouraged them to visit plants that had Pinheiro machines to get a real world perspective,” he said. “They saw some of our customers,” including the one in British Columbia, which had operations similar to All Bay.”
        The first personal contact River Valley had with All Bay was when a technician went to California to set up the new machine and train employees. “I was jealous of that technician,” Stan quipped.
        River Valley supplies machines, stock parts and provides service for the complete line of Pinheiro planers, planer-moulders, planer-ripsaws and ripsaws. The company also supplies tooling and dust collection equipment.
        River Valley customers range from manufacturers of log cabin components to high-end wide plank flooring as well as concentration yards and sawmills. “We emphasize the machinery can easily be used by small sawmills to add value to their final product rather than just selling rough wood,” Stan said.
        Stan’s company has perhaps a somewhat unique perspective in working with forest products businesses. “We’re based in an old planer mill, and one of our partners ran our first machine for many years,” he said, “so we have the practical perspective that comes with experience.”
        Pinheiro equipment previously was imported into the U.S. by another Maine company, Auburn Machinery. River Valley began distributing Pinheiro about three years ago, when Auburn Machinery went out of business, and the company employs a number of former Auburn Machinery workers.

 Pinheiro Machines Handle Wide, Thick Material
        The Pinheiro planer-moulders are suited for small to medium size sawmills and specialty manufacturers needing wider or thicker capabilities. They are considered the premier machines for producing wide plank flooring and components for log cabins, according to River Valley Machinery, and many leading manufacturer of log homes or components are equipped with a Pinheiro 1000 series machine in their operations.
        The Pinheiro planer-moulder is rugged enough for tough applications but capable of producing high-end mouldings and a quality finish. It is versatile, enabling a mill to produce products as small as 1-1/2x½ to 12x34, depending on the model. One model, now in use in Europe and soon to be introduced in the U.S., has a 16x20 capacity.
        All Pinheiro planer-moulders come equipped with motor control panels and are wired star-delta for reduced power consumption.

 Pinheiro 600 Series
        This is the most basic model. It is 18 inches wide and has powered feed rolls on the top only with idler rolls on the bottom. The bottom head is in the first position to efficiently handle even wide, cupped boards. While the 600 series opens up to handle 6-inch thick material, it is not designed for planing beams. Extremely compact, it allows for a great deal of versatility in a small footprint.

Pinheiro Series 800
        This model is no longer manufactured but is still offered after a complete reconditioning program.
        This versatile machine is 24 inches wide when used as a double surface planer, 20 inches wide when used as a four-sided planer-moulder, and can be opened to 8 inches for planing beams and log cabin components. It features both top and bottom powered feed rollers. This model is widely used in the wide plank flooring and log cabin industries.

Pinheiro Series 1000
        This model is specifically engineered for mills that produce wide plank flooring, log cabin components and similar products. This machine has easily accessible and adjustable heads that allow quick changeover for short runs and multiple patterns per shift. Four to six 5,300-6,300 rpm spindles enable the machine to produce a higher grade finish and or achieve faster feed rates. Each head has its own Star Delta motor to provide maximum power for minimum operational cost. Deeper profiling on this planer molder allows for extreme log cabin patterns, including rounds up to 9-½ inches in diameter. With an aggressive Cardan feed system, this machine provides the ability to mill larger timbers with low maintenance costs.
