Caterpillar has made major improvements to its line of track feller-bunchers, enhancing multi-functioning, maneuverability, tractive power and saw recovery time.

The new Cat 500 Series track feller-bunchers feature upgrades to the IQAN and hydraulic control systems that manage engine horsepower and hydraulic flow sharing. The upgrades achieved a 40% improvement in implement and travel multi-functioning ability. The machines can climb steep slopes while operating the boom, stick and tool functions simultaneously. The improvements also incorporate Power Shift, the horsepower-hydraulic management system already in other Cat forestry machines.

Design changes to the tool cylinder and head mounting adapter provide a 44% improvement in tool force capacity. This enables the operator to pick up and place larger trees precisely, increasing overall productivity.

The track feller-bunchers have a new boom cylinder design that gives the operator the ability to spot turn with a single function to maneuver around stumps or get out of deep mud. This added feature also helps minimize ground disturbance.

With the new IQAN software, operators can customize the joystick control pattern; over 1,000 control patterns are available. The operator also can choose to have the hydraulic oil level monitored continuously or only at start-up.
