Jake Goff, 72 years old, of Sky Rock Road in Big Island, Virginia, was cutting down trees along Wheats Valley Rd. in Bedford County. A Bedford County Sheriff’s office news release said that when the Bedford County Fire and Rescue units and sheriff’s deputies arrived just after 1 p.m. to an emergency responders call, they found Goff dead on the ground. A co-worker told authorities that Goff was alone and cutting a tree with a chainsaw.

It appears that the tree Goff was cutting hit another tree and a limb from that tree hit him. His family said Goff was in his element, enjoying the outdoors as he always did. Jake Goff was working for his company, Goff Logging, cutting down trees along Wheats Valley Road. Vonda Spinner, Goff’s oldest daughter, said her father had been working with trees since he was 11 years old. A hard working family man, he loved his family and the outdoors.

Vonda said that if anything ever happened to Goff he wanted to be in the woods. Goff will be missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife Rachel, four children and eight grandchildren.

The family requested that memorial contributions be made to the Big Island Volunteer Fire Department and Bedford County Fire and Rescue.
