Established in 2006, in Brazil, Indiana, Green Valley Wood Products specializes in wood blanks for the hobbyist. They offer “a wide variety of sizes, species, and types of turning stock, bowl blanks, platter blanks, pen blanks, lumber and more.” It seemed owner David Martin always knew he would end up in wood production. “I’ve always wanted a saw mill. [I] grew up on 70+ acres and would watch our mature timber get damaged from time to time and help my father just cut the logs into firewood. [I] Often thought there should be a better way.” The decision to invest in a Wood-Mizer came later on when David was given some Cherry logs. “The logs were so nice that I finally decided to get a sawmill to convert some of the logs to lumber instead of firewood. My first mill was a used LT30. I used the LT30 and got experience. I eventually upgraded to a new LT70 purchased directly from Wood-Mizer.”
The high production LT70 is now the backbone equipment component of Green Valley Wood Products. “We use the sawmill to cut all our blanks and lumber...from logs we purchase from landowners and from our own timber lots.” The lumber is then dried in the kiln and prepared for the customer. “We produce a large variety of laminated turning stock made from quality kiln dried lumber. This part of the business has become very popular with our Ebay and website customers (www.gvwp.net). We also produce a lot of pine moulder blanks for our moulder, [as well as] parts for log cabins including siding, T&G, trim, flooring, etc.” Wood-Mizer DoubleHard blades lend to the quality of product from Green Valley. “We purchase our blades 6 boxes at a time...[and] usually mix the degree. We use the 10 degree for most of our general cutting; 4 degree for our
extreme hardwoods and 13 degree for Pine.”
Green Valley Wood Products has kept up with the wood industry by going digital with their product. “We market our stock mainly on Ebay, via our own website and local sales. We started the website in 2010. It has been gaining speed since its introduction.” Focusing on their customers has resulted in satisfied customers. “Our best customers are our loyal hobby people; many of whom are repeat customers. We supply many turners who have small shops and sell their finished products at woodworking shows around the U.S. We also have several cabinet makers who buy our lumber for making fine custom cabinets as well as custom Trim and mouldings.” “Many of my customers tell me there are not many places they can buy blanks for their hobby. Using the LT70 to produce these blanks allows us to provide blanks at affordable prices. My wood business is a lot of hard work, but it has great rewards as well.”
